Cranes
Cranes are made of heavy gauge steel or aluminum tubing. Some workstation gantry cranes are equipped with an enclosed track, while others use an I-beam, or other extruded shapes, for therunning surface. Bench or cart-mounted cranes are designed for small workspaces and one-hand operation. Jib cranes mount on walls or floors and consist of a horizontal beam (jib) upon which a shuttle or hoist is mounted. Floor or foundation-mounted jib cranes have higher load ratings than wall-mounted cranes. Machines range in size from small, workstation cranes to very large, heavy-duty construction cranes. Overhead cranes or bridge cranes attach a horizontal load-carrying beam to wall columns (overhung) or the underside of the ceiling (underhung). Boom cranes use a structure, pole or boom to support a suspended cable for load attachment. Tower cranes use a cantilever boom, but are designed for very heavy-duty operations. Mobile cranes and truck-mounted can be moved or driven to different locations. Ship cranes and deck cranes are designed for shipboard mounting and the loading or ships, freighters, and other maritime vessels. Stacker cranes are similar to bridge cranes; however, instead of a hoist, these industrial cranes use a mast with forks or a platform to handle unit loads. Top slewing cranes are the most traditional form of tower cranes. Top slewing tower cranes have a tower and multi-sectioned horizontal jib. These cranes rotatefrom the top of their mast and can increase in height with the project. Topslewing cranes are transported in separate pieces and assembled at theconstruction site in one to three days depending on the height. These cranes are generally sold to large building andconstruction groups, as well as rental companies. Unlike other tower cranes which have a trolley thatcontrols the lateral movement of the load, luffing jib cranes move their load bychanging the angle of the jib. The cranes are utilized primarily in urban areas where space isconstrained or in situations where several cranes are installed close together. Telescopic cranes areused primarily for lifting material and personnel on a job site, whilearticulated cranes are utilized primarily to load and unload truck beds at a jobsite. Jib cranes and industrial cranes are trussed booms mounted on a pivot to allow for boom rotation. Jib cranes derive their name from the horizontal beam. Industrial Cranes
An overhead travelling crane, also known as anoverhead crane or as a suspended crane, has the ends of the supportingbeam resting on wheels running on rails at high level, usually on the parallel side walls of a factory or similar large industrial building, so that the whole crane can move the length of the building whilethe hoist can be moved to and fro across the width of the building. Stacker cranes are similar to bridge cranes; however, instead of a hoist, these industrial cranes use a mast with forks or a platform to handle unit loads. With some applications, an industrial pendant is used to enable an operator to actuate lift or trolley travel.
There are many different sizes of industrial cranes. Small site-based cranes are used for designed for on-site applications.
